Guest Post: Five Scenic Italian Drives

Italy’s lush landscapes have been admired and recreated by some of the world’s most notable artists over the centuries.  One of the best ways to admire these stunning pastoral or seaside views today is through the window of an automobile.  Italians are passionate about many things, but fast cars rank at the top of the list.  The country is home to some of the most exciting, breath-taking motorways in Europe, making any Italian drive something extraordinary.

1. SS1 – Via Aurelia

Traveling along the glamorous Italian Riviera, the Via Aurelia was first constructed in 241 BC and offers no shortage of cliff-side twists, turns, and dips in the road to enjoy.  You can certainly imagine driving one of these chic Ferrari models along this road, stopping in luxurious destinations such as Portofino and Camogli along the Ligurian Sea.  Many of these resorts have retained their elegance over the years as others have faded, with chic boutiques and seaside cafes built into the cliffs.  The road is still in good condition despite its ancient origins, although it can be a bit narrow at times.

2. SS48 – Great Dolomite Road

A 100 kilometer drive cutting through the Dolomite Mountain Range in the Italian Alps, this legendary roadway provides unforgettable vistas and exciting hairpin turns to navigate.  One of the most interesting sights to enjoy on this drive is its ancient coral reefs, located thousands of feet above sea level.  You can travel the distance in three hours, but it is worth stopping in the charming villages and viewpoints along the way.

3. Amalfi Drive – Sorrento to Salerno

The drive from Sorrento to Salerno in the southwest of Italy is undoubtedly one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of shoreline.  Yet a drive along the Amalfi Coast is not for the faint-hearted, with its steep drops and narrow turns.  The narrow roadway was originally built by the Romans and can get quite congested particularly during the high season.  However, the traffic is well worth it for the rewarding sights along the journey.  You will pass through secluded coves, deep gorges, and picturesque fishing villages such as Portofino built into the coastal cliffs.  You will want to stop and enjoy the local seafood and limoncello in this region after taking a dip in the impossibly blue water.

4. Stelvio Pass

The Stelvio Pass is located in the Italian Alps, spanning the distance from Bormeo to Stelvio.  It has gained greater notoriety in recent years after being named the “greatest driving road in the world” by Top Gear, thanks to its network of over sixty hairpin turns traveling up and down the mountain.  Automotive enthusiasts travel from far and wide to navigate their sports cars up and down this twisty road, with its dramatic views and challenging pathway.

5. Gallura Coast

Sardinia’s Gallura coast is a gorgeous area of unspoilt scenery, offering plenty of secluded beaches and panoramic seaside views to enjoy.  This drive takes you around the outline of the island, although you can take an inland detour if you want to see the rustic side of life that Sardinia is famous for.

When traveling any of these scenic roads give yourself plenty of time to stop and admire the scenery.  Even when driving a fast Italian sports car, you will want to take it slow to make the most of your journey.
